Sunday marks 25 years since Cal played in his record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game, passing the “Iron Horse” Lou Gehrig on the all-time list and the memories of one of the greatest moments in sports history continues to leave an indelible mark on the game of baseball, its fans and on the “Iron Man” himself.
The look-back at this feat begins on Thursday night as WBAL-TV in Baltimore will broadcast a half-hour special from Ripken Stadium with sports anchor Pete Gilbert sitting down to have “A Conversation with Cal” to reflect on that extraordinary night and how he’s making an impact today with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation.
Beginning at noon on Sunday, the special day kicks off with MLB.com featuring a website-takeover digital package detailing the historic streak. The unique content will feature former players, coaches, staff and media relating to the “The Streak” as they share memories of Cal and his journey on the League’s website and across its social platforms. MLB.com will also stream “Iron: The Legacy of Cal Ripken, Jr.” on its homepage beginning at 12:00 PM ET.
During the Orioles game on Sunday, Cal will join both the MASN television and Orioles Radio Network broadcasts to reflect on 2131 during the Orioles game against the New York Yankees at 1:00 p.m. ET. Cal also recently took part in a unique event, filming a virtual ceremonial first pitch to his son, Ryan as the pitch will be part of pregame ceremonies at Camden Yards and shown on broadcasts and in ballparks across Major League Baseball in recognition of the 25th anniversary.
On Sunday night, MLB Network will air The Streak: 25 Years Later at 8:00 p.m. ET, which features a fascinating, one-on-one discussion between Ripken and MLB Network’s Tom Verducci as they watch memorable moments from that night more than two decades ago. Cal joined Verducci in MLB Network’s Studio 42 to talk about the entire lead up to the game and the moment it became official, as well as his link to Gehrig in baseball history, Cal Senior’s influence on his baseball life and the mentality needed to accomplish this major feat.
Cal’s contributions stretch far beyond the field and that night and is never more apparent than through the efforts of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. Recently, Cal took the opportunity to further reflect by looking back at 2131 and how he’s using the anniversary to further his legacy through the Ripken Foundation.

To honor this historic night and the amazing accomplishments that Cal has contributed to support the Ripken Foundation, there are plans to honor the 25th anniversary by continuing the mission of transforming communities and changing kids’ lives.
The Foundation has opened up donations towards their goal of creating the 100th Youth Development Park in the foundation’s history in Baltimore this fall. These baseball and multipurpose turf fields provide a clean and safe place for youth in the Cherry Hill neighborhood to learn life lessons such as teamwork, respect and communication.
There are a variety of ways to help donate to the cause: Through the Ripken Foundation website and through their Facebook Fundraiser where you can help spread the word by donating and sharing the fundraiser, all proceeds going towards helping to build field #100 in Baltimore City. Or you can text “2131” to 76278.
You can also help spread awareness by adding the Ripken Foundation’s social media handles and hashtags to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, along with the hashtags: #2131StreakWeek and #calripkensrfoundation.
